1. One Big Thing: Bluewater Lagoon closed for maintenance
What’s Happening?
The Bluewater Lagoon in Mackay is set to undergo essential maintenance work this winter to ensure it remains a favourite spot for local residents and visitors.
Why It Matters
The maintenance work is essential to maintaining the lagoon's safety and functionality.
It will extend the lifespan of the popular water feature, securing its future as a recreational hub for the community.
Zoom In
The Bluewater Lagoon will be closed from June 5 to August 31, 2023.
Contractor Aquatic Project Solutions will reline the wading pool and assess the two main pools.
Works will be carried out Monday to Saturday, with limited noise impact expected.
By the Numbers
2 main pools to be assessed.
3 months of closure from June to August.
6 days of work per week will be required to complete the maintenance.
Local Impact
Though the lagoon closure may inconvenience some, residents can expect long-term benefits from the updates, given the facility will continue serving the community's needs for years to come.
What To Look For Next
Expect Bluewater Lagoon to reopen with improved facilities at the end of August.
Look forward to enjoying a rejuvenated and better-equipped lagoon on the other side of the cooler months.
2. 2024, A Turning Point for Global Emissions?

What’s Happening
Recent reports suggest global greenhouse gas emissions may peak in 2023/24, propelled by rapid advancements in clean technologies and robust international climate commitments.
Why It Matters
Achieving a peak in emissions is pivotal for initiating a sustained decline, essential to meeting the Paris Agreement’s goal of capping warming at 1.5°C.
What even is the Paris Agreement?
You can check it, here.
By the Numbers
There was a record high installation of solar panels and electric vehicle sales last year (Last year, more solar panels were installed in China — the world’s largest carbon emitter — than the US has installed in its entire history)
In this report, it has been found that there’s a 70% chance emissions will start to decline in 2024.
Major emitters like the USA and China have shown significant shifts in emissions trends.
Triple peaks are suggested here - Peak coal in 2023, peak gas in 2024 and apparently continued growth in electric vehicles could lead to peak oil in 2025
A New Climate Narrative
As optimism cautiously rises, with technology and policy appearing to be hitting the mark, keep an eye on how the narrative evolves.
