1. Record-breaking Telecom Review highlights rural needs

What’s Happening
A record-breaking number of submissions has been received in the 2024 Regional Telecommunications Review, reflecting heightened concerns over connectivity issues for Australians in regional, rural, and remote areas.
Chaired by the Hon. Alannah MacTiernan, the independent Committee has conducted face-to-face consultations and reviewed these submissions to ensure comprehensive input.
The Committee will soon deliver its report and recommendations to the Minister for Communications, the Hon. Michelle Rowland MP, who established the Review’s Terms of Reference in January 2024.
By The Numbers
3,404: total submissions – reflecting a 400% increase from 2021, a record in the Review’s history
3,098: online survey responses, thanks to an accessible format introduced this year
306: written submissions, capturing in-depth accounts of connectivity challenges
What To Look For Next
With the Committee’s report due by December 31 2024, rural Australians can anticipate policy shifts and potentially new programs aimed at improving connectivity.
The upcoming recommendations will seek to address unique rural needs and establish a robust framework to support telecommunications access across Australia.
2. Funding available for Mackay’s Australia Day events
What’s Happening
To celebrate Australia Day 2025, Mackay Regional Council is offering up to $1,000 in grants for local not-for-profits to host free public events across the region.

Mayor Greg Williamson shared his enthusiasm, stating, “We are really looking forward to a ripper Aussie Day event lineup in the new year.”

Applications for these grants open November 1 and close November 24.
Eligible events must be held on Sunday, January 26 2025, and recognise the Council’s support in all promotional materials.
